Frequently Asked Questions
During the day, the positioning of our body when standing and sitting allows congestion to drain out of our nasal passages with the help of gravity. However, when sleeping and lying flat, the congestion cannot drain out of the head because gravity does not push it down the body. Additionally, blood pressure is higher since the body is lying flat, increasing inflammation in the head and making congestion and pain worse.
The Tum&Bum is 100% polypropylene, one of the most commonly used thermoplastics in the world. The Tum&Bum is 100% latex free, hypoallergenic, medical-grade and impact-resistant.
The Tum&Bum places the child at an incline, which offers two primary benefits. First, this ensures that blood does not pool in the head, lessening pressure, and inflammation in the head. Second, the incline allows mucus to naturally flow down the sinus cavity and throat, further helping with congestion. With both of these benefits, sick children can breathe easier and sleep more soundly through the night.
Doctors often recommend placing pillows under a child’s head when they are sick to create an incline and help relieve symptoms. However, when sleeping you want to maintain a straight line from head to spine, and using too many pillows places the neck at an uncomfortable angle.
The Tum&Bum places the child’s entire upper body on an incline, which creates a more comfortable sleeping position for the child and ensures that their neck and spine remain in a neutral position.
All the Tum&Bum does is keep your child in a slightly upright position when sleeping, so it is entirely safe to use. It acts similarly to stacking pillows under your child but with the added benefit of maintaining its position throughout the night.
Also, there is no need to worry about multiple pillows impacting your child’s ability to breathe. The Tum&Bum uses only a small cushion on the child’s face that you can pick, such as a blanket. So, your child’s nose and mouth will be clear to breathe as easily as they need.
The Tum&Bum helps to relieve symptoms of head congestion and excess mucus, so they help with any illnesses that have the following symptoms:
- stuffy nose
- runny nose
- head congestion
Illnesses that produce these symptoms include the flu, the common cold, allergies, and upper respiratory infections. Children are more susceptible to these illnesses because of their explorative nature and weaker immune systems, but having a Tum&Bum ensures that you are prepared to help them through the night when they do become sick.
The Tum&Bum should not be used for children who still sleep in cribs. Depending on the age at which your child transitions out of the crib, children as young as 2 can use the Tum & Bum, and children can continue using it until they are too tall for the position to be comfortable.
Setting up the Tu&Bum is incredibly simple. All you need is a flat and solid place (we recommend the floor) big enough for the Tum&Bum. Place the Tum&Bum down, grab a towel or blanket for the longer section (where your child’s head will go), and a pillow for their bottom. That’s it! Your Tum&Bum is ready for use.
When placed on the ground, the Tum&Bum will resemble a letter “L” tilted to the side or a checkmark (depending on the side you are standing on). Your child will straddle the Tum&Bum, with their bottom on the smaller section of the Tum&Bum and their chest on the longer part of it, so that they are lying on it. Their legs will naturally bend to curve around the Tum&Bum, putting them in a comfortable position to sleep.
The curved design holds them in this position, keeping them inclined throughout the night.
The Tum&Bum is very easy to clean, ensuring that you can always keep it sanitized. Simply remove the blanket or towel covering on top and the pillow and throw these in the wash. Then, wipe down the Tum&Bum with your favorite antibacterial spray or wipe. Once it is dry, place a new towel or blanket and pillow, and it is ready for another night!
The Tum&Bum does more than provide an inclined sleep space for sick kids. If your child is healthy, the Tum & Bum can act as a workout station, hiding place, or indoor slide. It is also a great place to comfortably sit and watch TV, read a book, or play a video game. The opportunities are as endless as your child’s imagination!
No padding or covers are sold with the Tum&Bum for the simple reason that we found our kids wanted their own pillows and blankies with them while they slept. And Mom liked the ease of washing our own "comfies" each night until they were better and sleeping back in their beds.
Depending on the age at which your child transitions from crawling to walking is the youngest age we recommend for the Tum&Bum. Children can continue to use until their torso and head no longer fits when laying on their tummy. That usually happens at roughly 8 years old. But the T&B can be used in the opposite direction for watching TV and playing video games for any size. Our owner is 6 foot 3 inches and weighs 200 lbs and uses it with no problems.
